ISHS Acta Horticulturae 162: Symposium on CO2 Enrichment

PHOTOINHIBITION OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN LEMNA GIBBA: THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT O2 AND CO2 CONCENTRATIONS DURING PHOTOINHIBITORY TREATMENT

Authors:   S. Nilsen, R. Chaturvedi, C. Dons
Abstract:
Photoinhibition was induced in Lemna gibba by illuminating the plants either in the absence of CO2 and O2 or with high photon flux density (PFD) light, conditions which limited the means of dissipating excitation energy. Photoinhibition was highest in the presence of N2, less in O2 and lowest in air. The data suggests that pseudocyclic phosphorylation may play a role in dissipating photochemical energy when CO2 is absent or limiting and O2 is present. It also supports the view that Photosystem II related reactions are most affected during photoinhibition. Plants could recover from photoinhibition with time, but the level of recovery was related to the level of photoinhibition.
