ISHS Acta Horticulturae 161: Symposium on Production and Preservation of Pears

COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY OF TAXONOMY OF SPECIES PYRUS

Author:   A. TERPÓ
Abstract:
The first classification of species of genus Pyrus on the basis of relationship was performed by DECAISNE /4/. The arrangement used by him was the following:
  1. Proles armoricana /P.cordata, boissieriana, longipes/.
  2. Proles germanica /P.communis/.
  3. Proles hellenica /P.parviflora, bourgaeana, syriaca, glabra/.
  4. Proles pontica /P.elaeagnifolia, kotschyana, nivalis, salicifolia/.
  5. Proles indica /P.pashia, balansae, jacquemontiana, betulaefolia/.
  6. Proles mongolica /P.sinensis/.

However KOEHNE /6/ included the species of genus Pyrus into two Section:

Sect.1., Achras - calyx-lobes persistent on fruit, styles normally 5 /sometimes 4/.

Sect.2., Pashia - calyx-lobes deciduous, styles 2–5.

The following taxonomist was MALEEV /7/. His classification based on DECAINE's taxonomy in arrangeing the species of genus Pyrus.

  1. Ser.Communes MALEEV - Proles Germanica DECAISNE /P.communis./ P.balansae, P.turcomsnica/.
  2. Ser.Cordatae MALEEV - Proles Armoricana DECAISNE /P.boissieriana/.
  3. Ser.Sinenses MALEEV - Proles mongolica DECAISNE /P.ussuriensis, P.asiae-mediae, P.grossheimii/.
  4. Ser.Ponticae MALEEV - Proles Pontica DECAISNE /P.elaag ifolia, P.taochia, P.salicifolia, P.takhtadzhianii/.
  5. Ser. Syriacae MALEEV /P.syriaca, P.sosnovsky, P.oxyprion, P.raddeana, P.zangezura, P.korshinskyi/.
  6. Ser.Heterophyllae MALEEV /P.regelii/.

The classification of KOEHNE got the best known perhaps due to easy determination of species as well. /ASCHERSON--GRAEBNER, 1; REHDER, 9/ Numerous authors refuse to admit, that all the species could be included into the forementioned two Sections. Even the well-known
