Abstract:
The performance of three quince rootstocks for pears (Quinces A(EM), C(EM) and INRA BA-29) has been evaluated in three different trials with the varieties Doyenné du Comice, Beurré Hardy and Passe Crassane.
The rootstocks gave a range of tree sizes independent of the variety; Quince BA-29 gave the most vigorous trees, QC the least vigorous ones, and QA was intermediate.
Preliminary results of yield per tree in Beurré Hardy and Doyenné du Comice indicate no differences in total crop between the three rootstocks so far, but a consistently higher yield was obtained in Passe Crassane on QBA-29 vs.
QA and QC. Rootstock efficiency seems to be related to the variety, with better results in Doyenne du Comice on QC, Beurré Hardy on QA and Passe Crassane on QBA-29.
