Abstract:
In a rootstock nursery (Burgmer, Straelen) differences were found in the growth of M.9 mother plants as well as in the rate of layer formation and rooting of layers.
Vigorous and less intensely growing M.9 layers with different degrees of rooting, feathering and leaf areas occurred.
The differences were caused genetically rather than by virus.
Several apple varieties were budded on to selected M.9 rootstocks classified as good or not acceptable material and compared in the orchard according to their general performance.
Some clones which behaved better in the nursery affected tree growth better than those showing inferior growth characteristics in the stool-bed.
Out of the well-performing clones the three best ones were made virus-free and budded with Golden Delicious, Cox's Orange Pippin and Gloster cultivars.
They were planted together with virus-tested rootstock combinations and three virus-free M.9 selections from the Netherlands in the Experimental Station of the Institute for Fruit and Vegetable Research in Klein-Altendorf where they were tested for several years.
