Abstract:
M.9 rootstocks from different sources in a number of countries were collected and studied.
Two distinct groups could be identified on the basis of differences in propagation, shoot thickness and spininess, leaf size, the serration of leaf margins and flowering behaviour.
It is suggested that these differences are a consequence of ontogenetic variation rather than mutation.
In the nursery the M.9 rootstocks with juvenile characteristics were easier to propagate and produced the best maiden trees but in the orchard there were no obvious differences in vigour or yield between trees on M.9 from the various sources.
Formation of burrknots may be a disadvantage of the plants with juvenile characteristics.
