Abstract:
Spartan apple trees on Alnarp 2 rootstock were planted at 7 densities ranging from 420 to 2 990 trees per ha. in a layout that avoided rectangularity effects.
Yield trends over 16 seasons are presented.
Yields have been well maintained at the highest densities through containment pruning.
Profitability when overcropping is prevented, is still related to density.
Some implications for orchard management practices are discussed.
