ISHS Acta Horticulturae 160: III International Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

EFFECT OF DENSITY ON CROPPING OF SPARTAN APPLE TREES THROUGH 16 SEASONS

Author:   A.D. Crowe
Abstract:
Spartan apple trees on Alnarp 2 rootstock were planted at 7 densities ranging from 420 to 2 990 trees per ha. in a layout that avoided rectangularity effects. Yield trends over 16 seasons are presented. Yields have been well maintained at the highest densities through containment pruning. Profitability when overcropping is prevented, is still related to density. Some implications for orchard management practices are discussed.
