Abstract:
Malling 20 (M.20) is similar in its effects on tree vigour to M.27 and was rejected in favour of the latter because it is more prone to sucker production.
It does, however, give larger and less-russetted fruits so was re-evaluated under modern management conditions.
A systems trial was planted in 1969/70 to compare Cox, grown in zig-zag double-row systems on M.20, M.27 and M.9 at tree densities of 3954, 3459 and 2471 trees/ha respectively.
Over the period up to 1980 when the trial was grubbed the blocks on M.20 gave the highest yields.
In a more recent trial of single and double rows of Cox on virus-free M.20 and M.27 at the same densities the trees on M.20 are giving higher yields and a higher proportion of Class 1 fruits.
