ISHS Acta Horticulturae 160: III International Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

TRENDS OF PRODUCTION, CULTIVARS AND PLANTING SYSTEMS ON APPLES AND PEARS IN WESTERN EUROPE

Authors:   F. Winter, M. Welte
Abstract:
The overproduction of apples in the EEC member countries is about 10% in a normal crop year in relation to the balance of production to consumption. The top country concerning apple as well as pear production is Italy, whereas in France the new planting rates indicate a reduction.

On apple cultivars:- Golden Delicious is still the main variety but there is a tendency to more diversification, mainly under temperate climate conditions.

On pears:- Italy produces more than the total of all the other countries; Conference will become the main cultivar.

On planting systems:- High density plantings on dwarf to medium rootstocks are more and more preferred in all areas but individual preferences by area do still exist and will continue, influenced by local tradition and ecological reasons - mainly differences in radiation.
