ISHS Acta Horticulturae 160: III International Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SPACING AND ROOTSTOCK EFFECTS IN AN INTENSIVE PLANTING TRIAL OF TWO APPLE CULTIVARS

Authors:   S. Sansavini, B. Marangoni, C. Buscaroli, L. Corelli, G. Tazzari
Abstract:
Four years after planting a variety x rootstock x spacing trial at Cadriano the influence of the rootstocks (M.27, M.9., M.26 and MM 106) on the growth of Golden Delicious and Clear Red Delicious was much greater than that of spacing.

M.27 was found to be too dwarfing for the single-row systems used. Even at the highest density of planting (3.5 x 0.8 m) it gave lower yields per ha than the other rootstocks although its use resulted in higher leaf efficiency and better fruit quality. It also tended to reduce fruit size.

The field performance of M.9 was better than that of any other rootstock. The plots on M.9 at high density (3.5 x 0.8 m, i.e. 3571 trees per ha) out-yielded those of all other rootstock x spacing combinations in the third and fourth years after planting without giving appreciable loss of fruit quality.

Closer spacing actually tended to increase yield per tree in the third year (e.g. that of Golden Delicious on MM.106) but started to reduce this in the fourth year as competition effects became evident.
