Abstract:
It has been shown that the height of the peach tree canopy can be reduced by containment pruning but auxin paints should be applied to the major pruning cuts to reduce watershoot regrowth below them.
A 1% concentration of NAA in a paint appears to be the most effective although gummosis is promoted on the treated cut.
The application of 0.5% NAA only reduces shoot growth, being more effective when sprayed as an aqueous solution to the bark.
Total tree growth is not affected by this pruning method, but yield is reduced the following summer, due to the fewer number of fruits, although these are bigger.
Growth of shoots in the lower part of the tree may allow tree structure reconstruction in this part.
