Abstract:
An experiment designed to study the training and spacing of dwarf apple trees was initiated at Frelighsburg, Quebec, in 1976. The training systems under evaluation were Christmas Tree (CT), Van Roechoudt Palmette (VP), Slender Bell (SB) and Oblique Palmette (OP). Trees were free standing in the CT system and supported in the VP, SP and OP systems.
There were 3 densities designated as low (LD), medium (MD) and high (HD): respectively 740, 1480 and 2960 trees/ha.
The MD treatment was common to the 4 training systems; LD was applied to CT and VP, and HD to SB and OP. The rootstocks used were Malling 9 (M.9), Ottawa 3 (Ott.3), Malling 26 (M.26) and Malling 7 (M.7).
The most profitable proposal for local soil and climatic conditions, in terms of early cropping, total yield, compactness and cold hardiness was the SB system pruned according to the French vertical axis method at HD or MD, using Spartan/Ott.3 or Spartan/M.26.
