ISHS Acta Horticulturae 160: III International Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

MAIN FEATURES OF FRUIT PRODUCTION IN THE FRENCH MEDITERRANEAN AREA

Author:   J. Hugard
Abstract:
The Mediterranean area of France is rather small, extending along the sea shore and the central and southern Rhone Valley. Its climate, with mild winters, limited spring frost hazards and warm summers, is very favourable to fruit production wherever irrigation is available. This is the main area for fruit production in France. Peaches, apples and pears are widely grown and sweet cherries and apricots are also important products. Olives, which are a very old and typical crop of the region, are diminishing in importance while there has been an increasing planting of Kiwi fruit over the last eight years.
