FRUIT GENETIC RESOURCES IN ITALY

Author:   C. Fideghelli
Abstract:
Under the co-ordination of professor Franco Scaramuzzi of the Florence University, 24 Italian research institutes belonging to the University, to the Ministry of Agriculture, to the National Research Council (CNR) and to regional governments, in 1980, started a cooperative programme to inventory, to describe and to collect the fruit germplasm present in Italy.

The programme is carried out under the patronage of the CNR and, for the moment, works only on the 10 main species: almond, apple, apricot, cherry, citrus, grape, olive, peach, pear, plum.

For each species a responsible co-ordinates several scientists working in definite geographical areas covering the whole country.

The records are collected according to a common methodology compatible with the criteria used by the international organizations (I.B.P.G.R., U.P.O.V.).

Up to now the national inventory is almost completed and the collection of the varieties in few germplasm repositories was begun.
