FIVE YEARS OF STRAWBERRY BREEDING FOR SOUTH ITALY

Abstract:
Since 1977 a new breeding program for the improvement of strawberry has been settled at the Istituto Sperimentale per la Frutticoltura of Rome.

This program concernes with research to introduce new varieties more suitable for southern Italian areas.

The main objectives are the improvement of:

size of the fruits
yield
earliness
flesh firmness
ripening contemporaneity.

So far 10095 seedlings have been obtained through 137 crosses.

The advanced selections, still under evaluation, are 46 for the first three years of crosses. All of them show superior characters for at least two features above mentioned.
