ISHS Acta Horticulturae 159: Conference on Temperate Tree Fruits and Nuts Breeding

BREEDING PROGRAM FOR PEACH ROOTSTOCKS RESISTANT TO WATERLOGGING

Authors:   A. Nicotra, L. Moser
Abstract:
Istituto Sperimentale per la Frutticoltura is carrying out a research of new peach rootstocks resistant to waterlogging within the ambit of the large plum family.

Particularly of the Prunus domestica and P. cerasifera.

Two ways are followed:

  1. Seedlings one year old, originated from different parents are grafted or budded with peach varieties to observe after several years if every single progeny can be suitable for peach as rootstock propagable by seeds. Inside all the progenies considered not suitable, the seedlings showing good graft compatibility are selected to test also their ability to be propagated by hardwood cuttings.
  2. Seedlings of different origins are tested for their capacity to be propagated by hardwood cuttings; scions of the best seedlings for propagation are grafted with peach varieties to verify the graft compatibility.

First results obtained with progenies of 75 different origins in the former way and 35 in the latter are discussed.
