ISHS Acta Horticulturae 159: Conference on Temperate Tree Fruits and Nuts Breeding

SURVEY ON THE VARIETY SUSCEPTIBILITY TO PEAR PSYLLA

Authors:   R. Quarta, D. Puggioni
Abstract:
Breeding for resistance to Psylla pyri L. is one of the main objectives of the pear breeding program of the Istituto Sperimentale per la Frutticoltura of Rome (I.S.F.).

The aim of this work was to single out resistant varieties to be utilized as parents for breeding purposes.

The research was carried out on 93 cultivars and 43 selections grown in the variety testing trial of the Institute in Tormancina, near Rome.

Three years of observations showed that the most common varieties are all very susceptible to Psylla.

No cultivar or selection was immune, and only 12% showed a low susceptibility. Among these are: Spina Carpi, already used in the breeding program of the I.S.F., Sirrine and Monglow introduced as fire-blight resistant varieties and the selection I.P. 1268, obtained by Pirovano, by crossing Beurré Clairgeau with Passe Crassane.

The results of the first screening of the seedlings, obtained by cross-pollination using as parent for resistance the Spina Carpi cultivar, are also referred.
