ISHS Acta Horticulturae 159: Conference on Temperate Tree Fruits and Nuts Breeding

REPORT FROM THE MEETING

Abstract:
  1. Election of the new secretary

Dr. Y. Lespinasse was acting as secretary since 1976. At Hamburg (1982), it was decided to elect a new secretary in Rome. Dr Antonio Nicotra from Istituto Sperimentale per la Frutticoltura - Roma - was elected secretary of Fruit Section by unanimous vote. He is elected for 6 years (up to 1990).

It is underlined that a secretary from Southern Europe will be complementary to Dr. Ray Watkins, the president, who is more concerned by Northern Europe.

Dr Nicotra is in charge of the Pomology and Fruit Breeding Section of the ISF of Rome.

  2. Date and place of the next meeting

It has been proposed to organize the next meeting after the ISHS Congres (Davis - California, 1986); it will be the presumably first full week of September 1987 (7.11th September).

Everybody agreed to have the Eucarpia meeting in Eastern Europe; it will be the first time for the Fruit Breeding Section. Holovousy (Czechoslovakia) would be a very good location; Dr. Jan Blazek accepted to ask his administration to organize the meeting in a place close to Holovousy. In this case, dr. Blazek will be the local secretary.

  3. Relationships between ISHS and EUCARPIA

It has been noticed the increased number of various symposia and the difficulty to attend all of them. Too many meetings can be a handicap for the quality of each meeting (papers on peach initially announced at EUCARPIA (Rome 1984) were cancelled to be presented at ISHS (Verona 1984).

We proposed to nominate an observer (EUCARPIA - plant breeding) attached to the ISHS executive comitee, to avoid such overlaps. Dr. Watkins will make this proposal at the Eucarpia board. Dr. Schmidt

  4. Apple and pear breeding cooperative

Dr. Alston has coordinated fruit breeding information through the informal APBCE since 1973 (see Eurcarpia proceedings. Fruit Section - Canterbury - 1973 p. 160).

Dr. Watkins emphasized to send informations dealing mainly with new scientific highlights, and the proposals for next year's longterm projects. It was recommended to send informations at the end of the year and by groups of species: apples and pears - peaches and apricots - cherries and plums - nuts - small fruits.

  5. Proposal for the next meeting (contents)

5.1. Genetic resources: there will have the opportunity to be for the first time in Eastern Countries, it will be interesting to learn more about varieties grown in that area, specially as potential parents. Dealing with genetic resources, papers will be concentrated on criteria used to select genetic resources, only criteria with examples; it should be avoided lists of material.

5.2. Inheritance of agronomical traits: the topic will be again the inheritance of agronomical traits which is one of the basic reasons for Eucarpia Fruit Section.

    • fruit colour, spur type, sensory evaluations, chemical tests...
    • resistance to pest and diseases

Any experience on selfing is desirable.
