ETHYLENE RELEASING COMPOUNDS TO LOOSEN OLIVE FOR HARVESTING

Authors:   Haadi A. Khalaf, N. A. Faruqi, Haddi M. El-Gawawi
Abstract:
Two ethylene releasing compounds 2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid (Ethephon) and 2-chloroethyle - tris (2 methoxythox) - silnane (Alsol) at 1 000, 1 600 and 2 000 ppm concentrations were sprayed on olive cv. Gergashi in Tarhuna, Libya, during the 1982 and 1983 harvest seasons. Both compounds markedly reduced fruit removal force (FRF), but the response was more impressive in 1983. The quantity of fruit retained on trees after shaking was comparatively higher in trees sprayed with Alsol. A heavy leaf drop was observed on trees sprayed with Ethephon at all the three concentration and this was higher in the second year of the experiment.
