EVALUATION OF THE STORAGE POTENTIAL OF TEN SWEET POTATO CLONES (IPOMOEA BATATAS L) AT AMBIENT CONDITIONS IN SIERRA LEONE

Authors:   T.B. George, P.A. Kanu, M.T. Dahniya
Abstract:
A preliminary study on sweet potato shows that eight out of the ten clones stored at ambient temperature and humidity had storage periods of less than five weeks.

Ropot 2, the most widely cultivated clone in Sierra Leone had the poorest storage characteristics.

Microbial infections, dehydration and sprouting were the main causes of the poor storability. No weevil damage was observed in the field or during storage.

In Sierra Leone both dehydration and sprouting are usually considered not a serious post-harvest problem for sweet potatoes as they cause little or no economic loss to the potato farmer.

The data are discussed and suggestions made for further work.
