ERWINIA CAROTOVORA VIRULENT TO PEPPER (CAPSICUM ANNUUM L.) SEEDLINGS AND METHODS OF IT'S CONTROL

Authors:   T. Tegene, A.P. Korobko
Abstract:
A bacterium Erwinia carotovora was found on stems adjoining the roots of field grown seedlings of Chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) at Scientific Phytopathological Laboratory (SPL) and on pods of pepper plants obtained from farms of the Western Agricultural Development Corporation.

Seeds of Chili pepper which belonged to the Bako local variety when inoculated with a bacterial suspension of 109 cell/ml of Erwinia carotovora cells showed a 21% incidence of stem maceration on young nursery seedlings. A significant difference at LSD01 was found in total number of seedlings germinated. Seeds inoculated with the bacterium showed only 30% germination when compared with the untreated control. None of the chemicals used in this experiment controlled the disease significantly.
