| Abstract:
All control-methods for Orobanche spp. mentioned in the paper, i.e. hygienic/cultural methods, resistant varieties, biological control, synthetic germination stimulants, herbicides, soil sterilization, have their advantages and shortcomings either biologically, practically and/or economically. No all satisfactory means of control have been found so far, therefore a combination of suitable measures for a given situation in the sense of an integrated approach seems to be the most appropriate way to deal with the problem. For the mixed smallholder vegetable-farmers of the Khartoum-Province intensive information about relevant hygienic and cultural methods through an extension-service and the introduction of a promising direct control-method for areas with high Orobancheinfestation can be suggested; preliminary trials for evaluation of chemical control (glyphosate) and solar sterilization have been conducted with the latter appearing more suitable for use under Sudan conditions. | |
