EFFECT OF DD SOIL FUMIGANT ON POPULATIONS OF MELOIDOGYNE SPP. AND YIELDS OF AUBERGINE IN KENYA |

| Abstract:
In a field study, the effect of 1–3 Dichloropropane, 1–2 Dichloropropane (DD) on a mixed population of Meloidogyne javanica and M. Incognita in three varieties of aubergine was investigated on a friable red clay soil. The two rates of DD used were 74.10 and 111.10 L/HA, and the aubergine varieties were Black Beauty, Florida High Bush, and Long Purple. The results show that whilst there was no significant difference in nematode populations prior to fumigation, both rates of DD caused significant reductions. No significant differences existed between the rates. The fruit yields of two varieties were significantly increased by fumigation, whilst Florida High Bush at the higher fumigation rate significantly outyielded all other treatments. These yield responses to DD fumigation of root-knot nematode infested soil demonstrated the very substantial yield losses which can occur in aubergines as a result of root-knot nematode infestation. | |
