BREAKING BUD REST OF SEVERAL DECIDUOUS FRUIT TREE SPECIES IN THE KENYAN HIGHLANDS |

| Abstract:
Bud rest of apple, Japanese plum, peach, apricot and pear, was broken by artificial means in the Kenyan highlands in an area located at 0.5°N and an elevation of 1900 m, where no chilling was accumulated. The sequence of treatments that had a successful effect was: a period of desiccation, followed by manual defoliation, renewed irrigation, and rest-breaking treatments. Best results were obtained when the rest-breaking chemical treatments were applied about 6 months subsequent to the initiation of the former vegetative cycle. By utilizing this system, deep rest seems to be avoided and a normal growth cycle initiated. | |
