THE ORGANISATION AND ROLE OF CIP REGIONAL GERMPLASM DISTRIBUTION CENTER IN KENYA FOR POTATOES (SOLANUM TUBEROSUM) IN THE TROPICS |

| Abstract:
The paper addresses the problem of importing vegetatively propagated potato germplasm by developing countries, and gives the basis for Governments to relate with the International Potato Center (CIP). New germplasm is specially bred for National Programs by CIP and its affiliated programs. CIP has established a completely operative Germplasm Center in Kenya in order to supply new clones of high adaptation and increase food potential to countries in the Tropics. The author gives the organisation and facilities offered by this potato Germplasm Center; addresses the procedures and priorities behind the clones in this system and criteria for utilisation of CIP germplasm through International and Regional Potato Programs evaluations. Further needs of National Potato Programs in the utilisation of new potato clones identified as potential varieties by National Programs are considered in the light that this regional Germplasm Center can supply foundation and stock as well as True Potato Seed (TPS). | |
