ENERGY SAVINGS WITH JACKETED STORAGES

Authors:   R. Thériault, L. van den Berg, L. Dupont
Abstract:
Various possibilities for reducing energy consumption in jacketed vegetable storages were studied. It was first shown that external air can be efficiently used for cooling that type of storage when air temperature is below -4°C, without any detrimental effect on the desired temperature and relative humidity conditions in the room.

Apart from the cooling periods, the operating time of the storage main fan can be reduced by half with a timer; this permits a partial operation of that fan without any problem. A similar partial operation can be applied to the internal fans which are used for mixing air inside the room; this does not entail any nuisance to the stored products.

The savings from those three changes were estimated 1875$ a year (1982); the needed investment, between 5000$ and 6000$, would be paid by itself within three to four years.
