EFFECT OF ETHYLENE REMOVAL BY ALUMINA/POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE ON MCINTOSH APPLES IN REGULAR AND CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE STORAGES

Authors:   R.L. Granger, G.L. Rousselle
Abstract:
During the 1982–83 storage season, 'McIntosh' apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) were held at 1°C in two regular storage rooms of small capacity. One room was equipped with cylinders of alumina/potassium permanganate pellets acting as the ethylene scrubber. During the storage period, apples from the treated room were firmer, better tasting, yielded more juice and contained less internal ethylene. However, soluble solids were not affected by the treatment. During the 1983–84, storage season, daminozide treated 'McIntosh' apples were held in two commercial controlled atmosphere rooms. One room was equipped with an ethylene absorbing cabinet operating with similar alumina/potassium permanganate pellets. In this second experiment, no significant effect of the treatment could be detected for firmness, juice yield and flavor. However, fruit internal ethylene was higher in treated fruit whilst soluble solids results were inconsistent.
