EFFECT OF BORON AND NITROGEN ON THE INCIDENCE OF HOLLOW STEM IN BROCCOLI

Authors:   B. Vigier, J.A. Cutcliffe
Abstract:
Control of hollow stem in broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var italica Plenck) with post-transplantation N and B applications has been investigated simultaneously in southeastern Quebec and Prince-Edward-Island. Nitrogen applied in bands at 90 Kg N/ha increased hollow stem by an average of 27% at both locations. Higher leaf NO3-N level was associated with higher hollow stem damage. Boron band applications (8 Kg B/ha) appeared to induce phytotoxicity at one location with a leaf B content exceeding 42 μg/g on a dry weight basis. A balance in the leaf NO3-N:B ratio in the range of 215:1 appeared to be necessary to reduce hollow stem to minimum levels.
