COMPUTER CONTROL OF ONION DRYING AND STORAGE

Authors:   M.R. Shipway, A. Parkin
Abstract:
A direct harvesting and store drying system has been developed in the UK to produce premium quality onions. It requires a high level of store management and in an attempt to reduce this a computer controlled unit has been developed to monitor and control store environment. The unit uses electronic sensing of temperature and humidity; automatic control of fan, heater and recirculation; and a screen and keyboard to display and change temperature and humidity levels. Trials with this store in 1983/84 showed that onions could be kept, under ambient conditions, for up to 6 months. At the end of the storage period over 95% of the onions were marketable and over 90% were in the premium quality grade.
