Abstract:
Ca-storage is a method of prolonging the storage life of Chinese cabbage; favourable and less favorable results have been reported.
The method has so far not been of any practical interest.
With the new knowledge about chilling injury in this crops, there are reasons to reconsider the matter.
Results from experiments with the 'Tip Top' variety at 2.5 and 5.0°C with 15 combinations of CO2/O2 revealed a clear positive effect of reduced oxygencontent at a CO2-level of 0.5 %, but not at 2.5 and 5 % CO2. It was observed that 1 % O2 might be to low.
There was also an effect of increasing CO2 until 2.5 %, but more questionable until 5 %. The results obtained with the variety 'Treasure Island' after 120 days at 2.5°C are inconclusive because the product kept so well.
For practical storage we find 2.5 to 4 % CO2/18.5 to 17 % O2 as the most interesting; an alternative is 2.5 % O2 only.
