OBSERVATIONS OF THE VARIATIONS IN THE INITIATION OF THE ETHYLENE CLIMACTERIC IN APPLES ATTACHED TO THE TREE

Abstract:
Fruit internal gas samples were analyzed to monitor the initiation of the ethylene (C2H4) climacteric in apples attached to the tree.
Although there were only small differences in the date of the initiation of the C2H4 climacteric when comparisons were made between trees in an orchard block, there were differences of 10 or more days when comparisons were made between blocks on a farm and between farms in a small town and between farms in a county.
The wide spread in calendar dates of the initiation of the C2H4 climacteric clearly showed that index or marker blocks cannot be used to indicate when blocks on a farm or when farms in a town or county should be picked if harvest is to be completed before the C2H4 climacteric had developed in the crop.
Each block must be monitored using a sample of at least 20–30 apples on each sampling date.
