Abstract:
Three factors, namely: variety, use of a growth regulator and harvest date seemed to influence the effectiveness of low ethylene CA storage of apples.
For 'McIntosh' apples, the best results were obtained by spraying the apple trees with daminozide, harvesting the fruit without excessive delay and maintaining the ethylene concentration in the storage atmosphere well below 1 ppm.
These conditions were necessary to keep the rate of ethylene production of the apples at very low levels and to keep the apples firm throughout the storage period.
Observations in four seasons indicated that an early upsurge in ethylene production by the fruit in storage was associated with significant softening of the fruit.
The rates of ethylene production of the low ethylene CA 'McIntosh' apples in the four storage seasons were also presented.
