Abstract:
The effects of Pro-long coating on the internal atmosphere of Cox's Orange Pippin, Bramley's Seedling and Golden Delicious apples were investigated at 4°C and 20°C. The magnitude of internal atmosphere modification achieved by coating was affected by temperature, variety, and the concentration of coating mixture applied.
Addition of a wetting agent to the coating solution increased the internal atmosphere modification of fruit kept at 4°C. Coating exaggerated the significance of natural differences in the permeability of individual fruit skins to gases, giving rise to large variations in the internal atmosphere of coated fruit.
These interactions were the result of applying standard coatings to variable produce; they suggest that the use of any coating material for the extension of postharvest life of apples will be suitable only in a limited range of circumstances.
