Abstract:
The effects of stem fruit thinning on earliness and production rates of stem fruits and side shoot fruits were investigated.
Fruits and flowers were removed from the first 5, 10, 20 or all axils.
If more stem fruits are removed stem fruit production starts later but at a higher rate.
Stem fruit thinning has no effect on the production rate of side shoot fruits.
Earliness and production rate of stem fruits are linearly related.
The onset of side shoot production is linearly related to the number of pruned axils.
Calculation of the economic production showed an optimum around 20 pruned axils.
Removal of the growing point at the wire resulted in a significant increase of the economic production.
