Abstract:
Two cucumber cultivars were grown by four methods in a substrate composed of black peat and wood wastes, in growing modules without heating /1/, artificially heated /2/ on two biologically heated layers: of straw bales /3/, and of wood wastes /4/.
The cv.
Wilanowski did not respond to artificial or biological substrate heating.
Neither harvest time nor yield improved.
For the cv.
Sandra the first harvest was earlier and yields were higher in artificially heated modules, somewhat lower in biologically heated substrates.
The amount of 30 dm3 substrate per plant in a growing module was found to be sufficient for early cucumber growing under glass.
