ISHS Acta Horticulturae 156: XII Working Party on Greenhouse Cucumbers

COMPARISON OF THE SUITABILITY OF SEVERAL CULTIVARS OF GREENHOUSE CUCUMBERS FOR SHORT TERM STORAGE

Author:   L. Umiecka
Abstract:
The suitability of several greenhouse cucumber cultivars for short term storage was estimated. In the investigations took part cultivars:
  • short fruited: Iwa, Maram, Skierniewicki,
  • semilong fruited: Minisol,
  • long fruited: Farbio, Moskowskij, Pandorex, Pepinex 69, Sandra.

The cucumbers were stored without prepacking and in non-perforated and perforated PE bags at three temperatures /5°, 9° and 13°C/ during 3, 6 and 13 days and additionally for 2 days at 20°C.

During the period of storage the following characteristics were estimated: colour, firmness, decay, market quality. The quality assessments rated on a 10–1 scale.

Cucumbers stored at 13°C retained a good and fair market quality the longest. Perforated or non-perforated PE bags used for packing had no significant influence on the quality of cucumbers during the storage. The non-prepacked cucumbers always exhibited the earliest wilting and losses of good quality than others.

Cv. Skierniewicki - a short fruited cucumber - retained its market quality, good soundness and good quality of cross-section for the longest period. Cv. Pepinex 69 and Farbio - long fruited cucumbers - have kept similarly but always had a bit lower quality of cross-section of the fruits.
