ISHS Acta Horticulturae 156: XII Working Party on Greenhouse Cucumbers

PERSPECTIVES IN CUCUMBER BREEDING

Author:   L.A.M. Zwinkels
Abstract:
The cucumber is one of the most widely grown species, cultivated in very different circumstances. When concentrating on the greenhouse cucumber market, the product model should formulate criteria for the ideal cucumber variety.
The criteria for   - productivity
    - fruit quality
    - crop certainty (parthenocarp)

are of great importance and are clearly defined by Royal Sluis and her breeders.

Of course the product model depends on market developments and the changing patterns of growing methods and of disease appearance. Therefor, Royal Sluis is working on further improvements.

With the introduction of the short cucumber variety for the fresh market - Serano F1 RS, we present the latest stage in cucumber breeding:

a more than average level of productivity, combined with an excellent fruit quality in terms of shape, colour and shelf life.

Improvements of Serano F1 RS will be made as far as resistances are required, but the development towards a somewhat longer fruit shape and a higher transport resistance is an important aim of the breeding department of Royal Sluis as well.

In the near future the breeding programme of Royal Sluis will offer the possibilities to introduce more advanced cucumber varieties. This contributes to a good development of the cucumber market in Poland and elsewhere.
