Abstract:
The locations of cultivation under glass in north-west Europe are now being more closely examined with respect to their potential to compete economically with production locations in southern Europe.
The ability to compete of three production areas in the Netherlands, Spain and Greece is being analysed applying a linear activity analysis model.
The objective is to find the regional allocation of production which minimizes the cost (production plus transportation) of satisfying the given demands.
The evaluation of the findings of the model results in an attempt to quantify the competetive power of horticultural production at the locations investigated as well as the quantification of their stability under altering production conditions.
The fundamental data, the model framework and the first experience with the model calculations are presented and discussed.
