ISHS Acta Horticulturae 155: VIII Symposium on Horticultural Economics

ECOMIC AND SOCIAL ASPECTS OF HORTICULTURAL RESEARCH

Author:   A. Casimiro Herruzo
Abstract:
This paper examines the role of public and private sectors in horticultural research, the distributional aspects of research activities and their international dimension. It is argued that, at the national level, government involvement in horticultural research is required first, to induce a more optimal level of investment and secondly, to contribute to a more equitable distribution of research gains. Because of the importance of horticultural products in many less developed areas, a substancial boost in research is needed in this field at the international and national levels to reduce the serious problems of poverty, hunger, and malnutrition in many parts of the world.
