ISHS Acta Horticulturae 155: VIII Symposium on Horticultural Economics

SOME CHANGES IN THE LOCATION OF VEGETABLE PRODUCTION IN SWEDEN

Author:   G. Larsson
Abstract:
During the last years we have noticed an increased interest in production of field vegetables in Sweden. This has lead to an increased competition between vegetable producers.

The traditional production area is located in the very southern parts of Sweden. Three large food chains with a total market share of about 75 per cent on wholesale level, have developed a large scale distribution system for distribution of products all over Sweden. Their primary wholesale level is located mainly in the south, close to domestic production and imports. The new growers are in most cases not located in the traditional areas. To them, secondary wholesale level, with units located all over Sweden, is an interesting and important link in the distribution channel.

The main purpose of this study is to find trends in the buying behaviour of managers at secondary wholesale level and to get their opinions of an increased regional production. Preliminary results show that they expect products to be grown at a shorter distance from them in the future. They find advantages as well as disadvantages of an increased regional production and state that they would buy more local products if production were increased in their area.
