FORECASTING EVOLUTION AT MEDIUM TERM OF ORANGE AND TANGERINE PRODUCTION IN THE COMUNIDAD VALENCIANA

Authors:   P. Serra, I. Fernández de Lucio, J.L. Vayá, R. Irene
Abstract:
Oranges and tangerines are the most characteristic agricultural production of the Comunidad Valenciana (A. Rico et al., 1982) and the most important export product of the Spanish agrarian commercial balance.

Within the citric sector some basic aspects are very well know. For instance, orange and tangerine consumption has become stationary in all markets (Romero R., 1970), after having reached a top seasonally covered by the production of the producing countries, which generally show an increasing trend. In Spain this tendency is also evident (Serra et al., 1977) as well as some changes in its qualitative characteristics what may cause some seasonal problems due to the lack of balance between fruit disposition and seasonal possibilities of consumption at the markets.

In this situation and, as oranges and tangerines are perennial groves, the performance of production predictions and their distribution along each crop season is one of the most important aspects in order to establish a reasonable and coherent policy in the citrus sector.

According to this, the aim of the present work is to know the evolution trends at medium term of orange and tangerine production in the Comunidad Valenciana according to varieties, definite geographical zones, and distribution along the crop season.
