Abstract:
The paper presents the results of an analysis of (a) consumer preferences for tomatoes of different countries of origin and (b) consumer attitudes towards tomatoes produced in the open field and glasshouse tomatoes.
In 1982 an inquiry was carried out in Hanover (Germany, F.R.). The 400 interviewed housewives had to evaluate "Dutch" and "German tomatoes", "tomatoes of the Mediterranean area" and an individual "ideal tomato". Three month after the inquiry 80 of these interviewees participated at a sensoric test with tomatoes of different origins.
By using multivariate statistical methods the interviewed sample was devided into six consumer types with homogeneous needs.
In the paper the attitudes of the six consumer types are described.
For each type a ranking of preference for the tomatoes of the different origins is presented.
More than half the consumers is interested in the country of origin and the circumstances of the tomato production (glasshouse/ open air production). The results of the inquiry were on the whole verified in the sensoric test.
