ISHS Acta Horticulturae 155: VIII Symposium on Horticultural Economics

TREE NUTS PRODUCTION AND MARKET IN WESTERN EUROPE: THE SPANISH POSITON

Author:   J. Tasias
Abstract:
Western Europe constitutes the main market for nuts which can be produced in mediterranean countries: almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, pistachios and pecan nuts. The level of demand has been increasing during the last few years, while european production generally has not followed at the same rate. At the same time, the USA has become the major supplier of nuts to the european market.

European fruit growing has developed mainly under wet or irrigated conditions. Some types of nut are able to be cultivated under drier conditions and for this reason can be considered as future alternatives in large area of mediterranean countries. For this reason and because of the potential demand in Europe, the possibilities for development of the cultivation of fruit trees into nut production are great.

The Spanish position could become better by joining the EEC: for Spain this would mean the convenience of a fast boost to the cultivation of walnut trees, also by the research aimed at the improvement of almond and hazelnut trees and the indroduction of pistachio tress culture.
