Abstract:
This paper analyzes Spanish exports of avocados in the last two growing seasons (1981–'82 and 1982–'83), both from a quantitative and a qualitative viewpoint.
A distinction is made between exports from the Spanish Peninsula and those from the Canary Islands.
The study was based on the following data, expressed both in absolute and relative (%) terms:
- Total and monthly exports.
- Exports by destination and their associations.
- Exports by varieties.
- Exports by grades for each variety.
- Exports by means of transport.
- Exports by Inspection Centers (CICE).
- Exports by mode of sale.
- Exports by exporting companies and their location areas.
In the 1982–'83 season, 2,909 Tm of produce were exported which represented a 1,35% increase vs the 1981–'82 season, which in turn amounted to a 37.70% increase vs 2,112 TM exported in the 1980–'81 season.
In the 1982–'83 season the Spanish Peninsula exported 84.5% of the shippings, and the Canary Islands the other 15.5%.
In the 1981–'82 season the figures were 83% and 17% respectively.
For both seasons the month with the largest amount of exports was December, with 24. 18% of the total exports in 1982–'83 and 24.99% in 1981–'82.
The main destination countries were France, which absorbed about 82% of our total shippings, and the United Kingdom, which imported about 15%.
The main varieties exported are Hass, Fuerte and Bacon.
The grades of most of our exported avocados were 12, 14, 16 and 18 for the varieties Bacon and Fuerte, and 14, 16, 18 and 20 for Hass.
The shippings were mostly made by road from the Peninsula and by sea from the Canary Islands, with very few shippings by train and plane, respectively.
