Abstract:
On the market for fresh cucumber the effect of the EEC-enlargement will be of major concern in the period October to April.
Status-quo-projections of demand to 1990 showed an increase, which is highest in December/January (+ 35 %) and lowest in October (+ 1 %). Most of the additional demand will be met by Spain and Greece.
The entry of Greece and Spain into the EEC will cause price reductions in the EEC-8 (without Italy) between - 0.5 to - 1.2 % in April and - 7.5 % to - 10.0 % in November.
Spanish exporters will enjoy price rises between + 7.4 % to + 9.2 % in December and + 20.3 % to + 25 % in April.
Greek exporters will be faced by a price decline from October to February and a price increase in March/April.
Spain will be in the position to increase its market share mainly at the expense of the EEC-8 and slightly at the expense of Greece (during autumn and winter). Effects on other third countries will be of minor importance because they are supplying insignificant quantities during this period.
