INFLUENCE OF DIRECT PLASTIC COVERING UPON THE QUALITY OF CARROTS AND LETTUCE

Authors:   F. Benoit, N. Ceustermans, K. Vlassak, J. Rouchaud
Abstract:
The carotene content in early carrots was increased by applying for a certain time a direct cover of perforated plastic sheeting (D.C.). This inhancement was significant in the plots that were treated with the insecticide Birlane (chlorofenvinfos).

In lettuce, on the contrary, it appeared that D.C. reduced the carotene content and the nitrification inhibitor Didin had the same effect.

As concerns the nitrate content in lettuce, we found that if the D.C. with sheeting of 500 holes per m2 was left on the plants up to the optimum date of uncovering - i.e. 28.4.83 - no NO3-reduction had occured. If the sheeting was left for a longer period of time, nitrates appeared to be present in the plants but in considerably smaller quantities.

The application of Didin substantially reduced the nitrate content in both soil and plants.

The application of Alzon, combined or not with Didin did not have this effect.
