RESEARCH ON THE USE OF PLASTICS AND SHADE NETS ON THE PRODUCTION OF SOME VEGETABLE CROPS IN EGYPT

Author:   F. El-Aidy
Abstract:
Egyptian climate is favourable for growth of most crops all the year round, and this did not encourage the development of the protected cultivation, which has not been used commercially till now in vegetable crops production in Egypt.

The importance of export for our national income and also the great progress in protected cultivation technology in the world led us to study the application of such technology in our production of vegetables.

One of these methods is using of plastic as protector for the vegetable crops to improve the conditions for growth of cultivated plants, during both winter and summer seasons.

Our research on plasticulture at Kafr El-Sheikh area started in 1974 and still progressing on vegetable crops. The objectives of our studies are:

  1. To improve the production of the most important vegetable crops (Table 1) during the lacking period of our local market.
  2. To increase the total yield and quality of major vegetable crops.
  3. To improve the production of some vegetables to cover the demand of export market.

As a rational start, the study included the construction of plastic tunnels and the research for a simple and low cost design (Table 2).
