Abstract:
Apples were introduced to Madagascar in the 17th century but only in the 19th century were the plantations established in the humid regions, east of a line from Diego to Amboasary and above 1 400 m altitude.
In the Vakinankaratra district, about 2 million fruit trees, of which 75% are apple trees, have been planted.
Research on Temperate fruit trees in the tropics has just been started.
Four trial plots have been planted with 10 different rootstocks from East Malling containing 6 varieties: Golden Delicious, Double Red, Black John, Mebrose, Maigold and Fisakana.
At the Antsirabe Station a pruning trial has started and, at the Nanokely Station, a trial on planting systems has been established (6 x 5 m, 5 x 4 m and 4 x 4 m).
