ISHS Acta Horticulturae 153: IX African Symposium on Horticultural Crops

LIATRIS FORCING IN KENYA

Author:   K. Waithaka
Abstract:
In producing Liatris cut flowers it is desirable to obtain marketable flowers which are more than 30 cm long and have many florets per spike.

These characteristics are influenced by the size and the age of the corms, the storage temperature and the duration of low-temperature treatment. A minimum of 8 weeks of low-temperature treatment at 3–5°C is required for corm dormancy release, early flowering and the production of more uniformed-sized cut flowers with acceptably long floral stalks.

Vegetatively-propagated corms produce more and a higher percentage of marketable flowers than those propagated from seeds. Large mature corms produce more daughter corms, more and earlier flowering shoots which result in earlier cutting.
