Abstract:
Tomato and Chinese cabbage require a temperature range of 15° – 20°C for good fruit set and compact head formation, respectively.
In the tropics, these conditions prevail only in the highland areas which are often far from large urban centres.
In 1973 the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center started a research programme aimed at developing advanced production technology for both these crops under hot, humid conditions.
Genetic and physiological studies into aspects of heat tolerance paved the way for the development of tropically adapted varieties through breeding.
The improved lines have been widely tested in the tropics for many years now and the most promising ones have already been released by national programmes in several different countries.
Areas of interest for future research are discussed.
