EVAPOTRANSPIRATION: ITS INFLUENCE ON NATURAL VEGETATION PATTERNS AND IMPORTANCE TO CROP INTRODUCTIONS

Abstract:
There are many examples of the unsuccessful transfer of high yielding crop cultivars from one seemingly comparable tropical climate to another.

In a recent study covering the lowland tropics of South America, it has been shown that natural vegetation patterns follow wet season potential evapotranspiration regimes.

As there is mounting evidence of an active role of transpiration in relation to crop growth, it is suggested that the seasonal evapotranspiration regimes of regions in which cultivars are grown be examined, together with other climatic and soil factors, if these cultivars are to be transferred successfully to other geographically distinct regions of the world.
